Just two days after Tommy Tuberville suddenly left Texas Tech to take over at the University of Cincinnati, Texas Tech has named former Abilene Christian University head coach Chris Thomsen as the Red Raiders interim head coach for the Meineke Car Care Bowl.
KCBD, NBC affiliate in Lubbock, confirmed that Thomsen immediately takes over as the interim head coach and will occupy that position for Texas Tech's appearance in the Meineke Car Care Bowl Saturday December 28th.
In an interview with TexasTech.com Thomsen talked about deciding to take on a difficult but great opportunity in being the interim coach.
“Kirby Hocutt called me late morning and asked if I would do it and I said I would be glad to it just because of this group of coaches and group of players, and I’m really excited about partnering with those guys for a common cause and get a win at the bowl game,” said Thomsen to TexasTech.com.
Thomsen was the head coach at ACU from 2005-2011 where he went 51-21.
Thomsen then resigned on December 16th, 2011 to join the coaching staff at Arizona State as an assistant coach.
On February 3rd, 2012, Thomsen left Arizona State to join Texas Tech's staff as their offensive line coach.
The Red Raiders went 7-5 this season earning an invitation to the Meineke Car Car Bowl where they will face Minnesota on December 28th at Reliant Stadium in Houston.
