Groundbreaking for new Eastland County rest areas
TxDOT crews broke ground on new rest areas in Eastland County Thursday. They hope the new rest stops will prevent accidents caused by tired drivers.
"Safety is TxDOT's top priority, and these new safety rest areas will help drivers make sure they are alert and well-rested during long road trips," said TxDOT Brownwood District Engineer Elias Rmeili, P.E.
They are being built along I-20, both westbound and eastbound, just east of Ranger.
The new rest areas will be air-conditioned and heated.
They'll also feature surveillance cameras, security, walking trails, and a children's play area.
TxDot statistics show that from 2007 through 2011, the number of fatigue-related crashes statewide dropped 13%.
TxDOT has been building updated rest areas across the state for about the last 12 years.
The new rest areas in Eastland County will cost about $16.4 million dollars.
They will be finished by spring of 2015.
