Red Wings 3, Hurricanes 2 (OT): Captain Henrik Zetterberg forged a tie by scoring with 17 seconds remaining in the third period and Stephen Weiss tallied 3:13 into overtime as visiting Detroit spoiled Carolina's season opener. The Red Wings knotted the contest as Daniel Alfredsson's bid was denied by Cam Ward, who lost his stick in the exchange - allowing Zetterberg to net his first goal of the season. The tide clearly turned as Weiss cleaned up a rebound from Johan Franzen to end the contest.Zetterberg also assisted on Justin Abdelkader's goal 42 seconds into the third period and Jimmy Howard turned aside 23 shots for Detroit, which has acclimated itself nicely to the East by defeating a pair of conference foes.Radek Dvorak scored just two days after signing a one-year contract and Nathan Gerbe also tallied. Ward finished with 35 saves after an MCL sprain to his left knee prematurely ended his 2012-13 campaign.Spurred by Ward's denial of Pavel Datsyuk on a short-handed breakaway, Carolina claimed a 2-0 lead late in the second period as Gerbe cleaned up defenseman Justin Faulk's deflected shot from the doorstep for a power-play goal.GAME NOTEBOOK: Carolina C Jeff Skinner returned after missing the final two preseason games with a lower-body injury to set up Dvorak's goal with 6:30 remaining in the first period. The 2010-11 Calder Trophy winner chipped a feed past Red Wings D Kyle Quincey to Dvorak, who deftly redirected the puck past Howard. ... Faulk, who notched a pair of assists, had just 10 in 38 games last season. ... Gerbe played all five of his previous seasons with Buffalo before signing a one-year deal in July.
