Brownwood Good Samaritan Ministries in need of volunteers for holiday season

A non-profit organization in Brownwood that strives to help the less fortunate is asking for the community's help as the holiday season is approaching.
Good Samaritan Ministries already has about 300 volunteers who contribute their time year-round, but the program manager Misty Bowers said she and other directors could always use more.
Bowers said they currently need volunteers to push buggies of bagged produce and help unload them into families' cars. They also need volunteers to help get families set up with the program through short interviews and applications.
"No one has ever been turned away. If they show up for food, they get food. Everyone who comes in December will get a Christmas box on top of their usual grocery staples." The Christmas boxes contain enough ingredients to cook a family meal.
Bowers said the Christmas season can be stressful.
"It's hard when you're trying to put money aside or you're trying to buy presents for kids and meet their expectations, so to be able to fill that need and go above and beyond to help someone out is a real blessing."
Although Bowers said the whole experience is worthwhile, seeing families' reactions is most rewarding.
"They're just so thankful and everybody just seems to be in such a good mood. It's just a really neat time to interact with some people that maybe you wouldn't normally get a chance to talk to."
If you are interested in volunteering to interview families, it is preferable that you commit to four-hour shifts. If you are interested in pushing buggies, you can volunteer for two-hour shifts. Scheduling is flexible and early notification is best.
If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions, you can contact Bowers at (325) 643-2273 or (325) 203-2489.
