New turf installation underway for Gordon Wood Stadium

After 10 years, Brownwood's Gordon Wood Stadium is getting a new look and feel.
New turf installation was underway Friday morning, which Brownwood High School football coach Chuck Howard said he is very grateful for.
"It was just time for a new turf," Howard said. "This is a more durable product. It's going to look and wear better. I think we can expect this field to last at least 10 years for us moving forward."
Howard said this project, which costs about $430,000, is a worthy investment. "If you break it down by the amount of use that we get out of this, not only through football games, but through soccer games, playoff games...and you calculate that over a 10-year period of time, I think it's extremely cost-effective."
Another benefit is that the new turf will be safer for the athletes who play games at the stadium.
BHS defensive back and wide receiver Kaimon Ontiveros said if he wasn't graduating this year, he would be excited to return and play on a new turf.
"I have scars all over my arm from turn burn so to get a new turf would be refreshing to play on," Ontiveros said. "The old turf was so worn out. If you ever hit and slid, you're guaranteed to get scraped up."
No additional funding from the public is necessary to replace the old turf because the money is coming from Brownwood ISD's fund balance. The turf is expected to be completed by mid-January.
Howard said some of the old turf will be used in the baseball and softball batting cages. Howard Payne University is also planning on taking some of the material. Whatever is left will be disposed.
