ABILENE, Texas -

The Development Corporation of Abilene has a new leader.

R. Kent Sharp, who most recently served as executive director of the Gainesville Economic Development Corporation, has been named as DCOA’s new Chief Executive Officer.

Sharp replaces Richard Burdine, who retired earlier this year as head of DCOA.

“I am very excited to join the economic development team in Abilene,” Sharp said in a city of Abilene news release. “And my family and I are looking forward to coming to the community. Texas will continue to see strong economic development across the state, and Abilene is very well positioned with great assets to capture its share of this growth.”

Before Gainesville, Sharp – who has an undergraduate degree from Texas Christian University – led economic development efforts in Big Spring, Stamford and Shamrock.

DCOA Chairman David Copeland said Sharp “brings an outstanding track record of success in economic development in Texas.”

“And we look forward to his leadership in the years to come,” Copeland said in the news release.

According to the city news release, “The DCOA was created in 1989 to administer the city’s 4A sales tax dollars to support comprehensive economic development activities including business incentives, land development and real estate holdings.”
