AMARILLO, Texas (AP) -

Five members of a popular summer musical production held each year in the Texas Panhandle – including a former Abilene Christian University student – were killed in an early morning auto accident.

Clint Diaz, an ex-ACU student who currently attends West Texas A&M, died in the accident. He has been identified as the driver.

Authorities have said alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the auto accident deaths.

Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Christopher Ray says members of the cast of "Texas," performed at Palo Duro Canyon State Park south of Amarillo, were returning from an end-of-the-year party Monday night when the two-vehicle accident occurred.

Their vehicle was attempting to turn onto U.S. 287 near Dumas, about 40 miles north of Amarillo, when it pulled in front of a big rig.

Texas Panhandle Heritage Foundation Executive Director Kris Miller said four of the dead were dancers in the production while the fifth worked in the box office. He said a sixth member was injured and is in surgery.

“There are still many questions with no hard answers,” ACU spokesman Grant Rampy said in an email. “The ACU community is praying for the Diaz family and the other families who grieve; for those in our theater department who knew and loved Clint; and for this young man's wide circle of friends – here in Texas and around the country – who mourn his loss.
