From the San Angelo Police Department:

On Sept.  9, officers were dispatched 2487 A&M in reference to a possible bomb. Officers located what appeared to be a small cylindrical shaped item with a wire attached to it and was covered by duct tape.

Officers on scene advised the San Angelo Police Departments Communication Center to contact the Abilene Police Department Bomb Squad. The APD Bomb Squad diffused the device and determined that it was not an explosive device.
The Fire Marshall’s office is conducting a follow up investigation.

The SAPD Communications Center put out a Nixle Alert to citizens at the time of this call to avoid traveling in the area due to the road closure. Some questions were asked about the alert not having as to the reason why the alert was issued. The San Angelo Police Department would like the Citizens of San Angelo to know that the alert was issued initially to allow first responders to deal with the potential of the explosive device and to provide absolute safety for any civilians in the area.
Once on scene the Abilene Police Department Bomb Squad was in control of the incident. Had the Abilene Police Department Bomb Squad decided that there was potential that this was indeed an explosive device a second alert would have provided more details to the Citizens of San Angelo. SAPD Officers on scene would have also conducted an evacuation of the immediate area residents had it been necessary.

Should any citizen of San Angelo decide that they would like to receive Nixle Alerts in the future they can do so by signing up through the San Angelo Police Department’s web page. You would then go to the Nixle Alert Icon and follow the directions posted.
