Governor Rick Perry has officially declared this week as Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.
Governor Perry's office released the following proclamation:
" The men and women serving as public safety telecommunicators are
dedicated to saving lives. These 9-1-1 operators and dispatchers and other
communication specialists respond to Texans in times of great need, and
their specialized skills and calm presence are invaluable to the Lone Star
The Commission on State Emergency Communications works with local and state governments to ensure reliable access to emergency telecommunications services. To highlight the invaluable role of public safety telecommunicators, the commission designates a week in April for an awareness campaign.
At this time, I encourage all Texans to extend their appreciation to public safety telecommunicators. Their diligent efforts ensure that help is on the way when we need it most.
Therefore, I, Rick Perry, Governor of Texas, do hereby proclaim April 14-20, 2013, to be Public Safety Telecommunicators Week in Texas, and urge the appropriate
recognition whereof. "
On Tuesday , Abilene Police Chief Stan Standridge released the following statement regarding the proclamation:

ABILENE, TX – Every day, and no matter where we are, Public Safety Dispatchers stand in the gap by providing an essential community service that most of us rarely ponder. But when a life threatening situation occurs, when our loved ones are endangered, or when we struggle with a calamity that occurs before our eyes, we depend on and expect that our emergency calls will be answered and first responders dispatched. The week of April 14 – 20th is a time set aside to acknowledge and recognize the accomplishments of our dispatchers and their commitment to their profession; one that demands their services 24/7, 365 days a year—they are The Team Behind the Scenes.
Today I commend the great men and women serving as Public Safety Dispatchers. Without them standing in the gap and providing their professional services, our mission to “Serve and Protect” would be greatly hindered. Honoring our dispatchers during Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is just one way of saying thanks for being there behind the scenes and one way to recognize their duty, sacrifice and contributions.
I share these facts from year 2012 for your consideration: our 34-member strong dispatcher community handled approximately 319,280 calls for service, including 79,161 9-1-1 calls. On their busiest day last year, they received 1,088 calls, and their busiest hour was staffed by only two call takers and three dispatchers. Yet they handled 179 calls in that hour. It takes six months to train a dispatcher, but it only takes a second to thank them.
Because of their service as public safety professionals, untold lives and situations requiring urgent intervention were directly impacted. Daily, these first-line emergency communication and response dispatchers provide exemplary services that meet the ever demanding needs of our growing community. Please join me in recognizing them for making a difference by serving and protecting you!
