A local woman has stepped up to try and put the Taylor County Veterans Service Office Thanksgiving Dinner together with less than three weeks left to go.
For 23 years veterans in Abilene have shown up for the dinner, but this year donations and volunteers dwindled to an all-time low forcing them to cancel.
"That was a very, very tough decision for me to make. I mean probably the hardest decision I've had to make my entire life," said Veterans Service Officer Jimmy DeFoor.
After DeFoor made the announcement the veterans office was given some unexpected hope.
"We have had an individual who has stepped up and said she will make sure that this event goes on and I’m very happy about it,” said DeFoor.
Connie Rose of Keller Williams realty said after she heard the dinner was cancelled she asked her company if they could help.
"This is so important to so many people to have this dinner. To have that just unable to happen just seemed like a terrible tragedy to us," said Rose.
She said she will need to raise about $15,000 and find many willing to volunteer this week, but she is confident that with the help of the community they can pull it off.
Donations can be made at Keller Williams Realty on S. 27th or to a special account set up at first financial bank.
