Love & Care Ministries: Nearly two decades of help

ABILENE, Texas -

The organization behind Mission Thanksgiving has a long history of helping those less fortunate, and they're not slowing down.

Pastor Mark Hewitt, founder of the ministry, began his work eighteen years ago.

Then, he was just serving 5 meals a day out of the back of a pick-up truck.

Today, he's the Executive Director of a group that serves more than 900 meals to the homeless and needy of Abilene.

Two years ago, the ministry would see between 65 and 70 people each day but the shaky economy has led to an increase in need.

Everyday the ministry helps to provide between 130 and 150 people with food or clothing.

Even with all the good they do, they still have their sights set on the future.

"We're dreaming about a possible shelter, some housing out there that we can create for the working poor or even the homeless that we need to help get on their feet", says Hewitt.

Mission Thanksgiving is the largest event put on by Love & Care Ministries.

Food donations received at last year's event lasted for six months.

Over 18,000 articles of clothing are given away each month.

Clothing donations from 2011's event lasted 10 months.
