Abilene Mayor Norm Archibald declared Friday "Abilene on the Move" day to motivate people to get physically active.
He and city employees took a break from work at 10 a.m. to go for a 10-minute walk around downtown.
"A healthy city is a better city," Archibald said. "It cuts down on healthcare costs it makes people more able to work, to be active, to do things together and it just makes for a great quality of life when the people are healthy."
Abilene on the Move is part of the Archibald's Council on Physical Fitness that he established in March 2008. The mayor's fall hike along Cedar Creek is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 20 at 9:30 a.m.
Health and Wellness Director Chelsea Woods with the YMCA of Abilene said walking is an excellent way for a person to ease themselves into a fitness-based lifestyle.
"Walking is easy. You can do it throughout the day while you're at work--if you have a break--you can do it during your lunch time," Woods said. "If you walk in the mornings, you know, it does help with your metabolism. It starts it off and it gets faster thorough out the day versus walking at night."
She said an active lifestyle can even promote cardiovascular health, prevent disease and keep a person happy and focused throughout the day.
"Being healthy itself makes you live longer," she said. "So if you wanna have that lifestyle to where you don't have to worry about being sick, then definitely start being physically active."
