Merkel Lady Badgers basketball headed to state; town sends them off in style
They're state playoff bound!
On Wednesday, the town of Merkel sent off the Lady Badger basketball team to the state tournament in Austin.
The team is hoping to start a new tradition - winning the title of 2A Girls' State Champs.
In 50 years, this is the first time the team has made it this far.
Fans say this has been a community effort and they're confident the Lady Badgers will take it all.
"They started this season with a goal and now they've carried it forward," said fan Dave Humphrey. "We know they're going to take it all the way and finish what they've started."
Parents of team members say this is well-deserved.
"This means everything to this town, to these girls and to these parents," said Denise Cope. "These girls have worked really, really hard. They started out in first grade playing ball together and they've played every summer since then. They've played over 400 games to get here today," Cope said.
This advancement to state is sweet redemption from the Lady Badger's early exit in last year's playoffs.
They lost to Wall in the quarter finals.
Merkel will play Poth Friday at 10 a.m. at the Erwin Center on the University of Texas campus.
