Justice of the Peace Mike McAuliffe was sworn in as an elected official for Precinct 1, Place 1 Tuesday morning.
McAuliffe, a retired Abilene police officer, had been serving as an appointed official for the position since October, after Justice of the Peace Bryan Smith retired.
With 60 percent of the vote, McAuliffe beat out Lydia Long in the August Republican runoff race for Precinct 1, Place 1.
He took the elected official oath at 10 a.m. Tuesday in his courtroom and was accompanied by his friends and family.
"I have two months under my belt, but I'm still learning every day," McAuliffe said. "I think the next four years will be a challenge for me both personally and professionally, but it's something I'm looking forward to doing. I've been looking forward to this for quite some time and I'm ready to go."
