ABILENE, Texas -

The day before Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the year.

AAA estimates that 43.6 million Americans will be traveling this Thanksgiving holiday.

39.1 million will be on the road, while 3.14 million are expected to take to the skies.

Texas State Trooper, Sparky Dean, urges travelers to give themselves time to get to their destination and to practice common safety rules like buckling up and staying sober.

Drunk driving and texting are increasing factors for motor vehicle crashes and fatalities.

Even the turkey could pose a hazard.

An amino acid known as Tryptophan is found in the Thanksgiving staple and is known to cause drowsiness.

Driving defensively is always recommended but if you encounter an overly aggressive driver, call 9-1-1 or the number on the back of your Texas driver's license.

If you're flying this holiday season, anticipate a longer check-in due to high customer volume.
