BROWNWOOD, Texas -

There is now a breast cancer support group in Brown County.

On Monday night, breast cancer survivors came together for the first time at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

The group, Brown County Circle of Survivors, hopes to reach out to many more people.

Amanda Leija is a reporter for the Brownwood Bulletin. She is also a 5 year breast cancer survivor.

Amanda knows the importance of having a support group, which led her to create the Brown County Circle of Survivors.

"When I was going through it, I didn't have anyone to talk to. I did have a good friend who I was able to talk about anything with, but even still she couldn't see where I was coming from when I would talk about my hair falling out," said Leija.

Survivors and those battling cancer can relate to one another and share experiences.

Linda Longley attended Monday nights meeting and has been battling breast cancer for 13 years.

"It keeps coming back on me, but I keep going into remission," said Longley.

Keeping a positive attitude throughout the years is what Linda said gets her through.

"I had a girlfriend that was diagnosed at the same time, so she and I would pick up the phone and say, 'Well, are we going to be red heads today, or are we going to be blondes?'"

Linda said the new group will also help her and her battle, and that is exactly what Amanda hoped for.

"Getting to help others, that way they don't have to figure things out on their own," said Leija.

Brown County Circle of Survivors will meet on the second Monday of each month.
