The Texas Rangers have been called in to investigate prank messages from fake Twitter accounts that spoof a Southeast Texas city council's actions.
Walker County District Attorney David Weeks said he called in the Rangers after Huntsville City Council members complained to him about being made the subject of ridicule. He says "it's too early to say if there's any illegal activity."
The complaints come amid campaigning for the Nov. 6 city council elections. Weeks says one of the eight council members complaining to his office is an incumbent facing a challenge from a local university student.
The Item reports the messages spoof comments members make during opening meetings and their voting records, as well as their religious faiths, personal histories and behavior.
