ABILENE, Texas -

A public hearing is scheduled Thursday for the proposed city of Abilene annexation of about 56 acres south of Beltway South (FM 707) near Beltway Park Baptist Church.

Jon James, the city’s director of planning and development services, confirmed Monday that plans are for a new subdivision to be built at that location.

The meeting is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at City Hall.

The proposal is the result of a request from Tack Investments and agent David Todd.

It will be the second of two public hearings before an ordinance reading is held on April 25 and a final ordinance reading and vote on the proposed annexation will be held on May 9.

The annexation would allow for city services to be provided, such as for police, fire, water, streets and trash.

Also Thursday, the City Council will consider a proposal to permit Bridger Petroleum, LLC, of Abilene to drill and operate oil/gas wells between Abilene Regional Airport and Loop 322.

Because of its proximity to the airport, a Federal Aviation Administration study was required, according to the city’s agenda packet.

The study concluded “that the drilling rig does not exceed obstruction standards and would not be a hazard to air navigation,” the provided the rig is appropriately marked and lit.
