ABILENE, Texas -

The Texas Department of Transportation is urging drivers to be careful in construction zones while traveling this holiday season.

Interstate 35 has the highest number of work zones to date, putting many workers and drivers at risk.

The Department of Public Safety will be increasing enforcement in certain areas to encourage drivers to follow the speed limit.

TxDOT wants motorists to stay alert and drive cautiously.

"A lot of people have family and friends in the Metroplex and Austin, even as far as San Antonio. We're encouraging people to use caution.  We'll have as many lanes open as possible. But definitely something to be aware of," said TxDOT spokesperson Darah Waldrip.

Last year there were nearly 1,500 crashes in construction zones in Texas.
