ABILENE, Texas -

Darah Waldrip from the Texas Department of Transportation visited KTXS on Tuesday morning and spoke about National Work Zone Awareness Week.

The official week runs from April 15-19.

On any given day, TxDOT can gave more than 1000 highway projects in progress.

In just 2012, 134 people died in roadway construction and maintenance zones.

Since 1938, 271 TxDOT employees have been killed in work zones. Nine were from the Abilene area.

Waldrip and TxDOT ask that people pick one day to wear orange this week to help raise awareness for work zone safety. The orange is in reference to the bright colored vests workers wear while working on the roads.

Here are some tips to stay safe while driving in a work zone:

- Slow down and follow posted speed limits.

- Pay attention to workers who are close to traffic.

- Don't text and drive.

- Be patient with delays and construction zones.

- Plan ahead.
