SWEETWATER, Texas -

One lane of traffic has been re-opened to drivers heading west on I-20 near Sweetwater.

A tractor trailer crashed into the support column of the Highway 84 overpass bridge Thursday night. Damage to the overpass forced a ¾ mile long detour west of Sweetwater.

The road is still closed to traffic traveling east. Traffic could see detours for up to six weeks while permanent repairs are made.

According to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden, the accident separated the cab from the rest of the truck. Madden said it was raining at the time of the incident.

The driver and co-driver were rescued through the windshield. They were taken to Rolling Plains Hospital in Sweetwater and are in stable condition.

Repairs to the bridge are estimated at $135,000.
