Verizon Wireless is the first service provider to expand their 4G LTE service to Abilene. Sprint and AT&T both offer 4G LTE in bigger cities like Dallas and Austin, but so far neither has a release date for the Abilene area. The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network launched in Abilene, Thursday.
"The first thing they're going to notice is faster speeds…It's on their phone, their internet, their tablet, however they're connecting to our network," said Verizon Wireless Assistant Manager Todd Northcutt.
Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network is available in 480 markets and Northcutt said it's 10 times faster than the old 3G network. That’s enough of a difference to make some customers consider upgrading to a 4G LTE compatible phone.
"We’ve had a lot of people come in asking about, ‘is it really here?’ We’re like, ‘yes, you notice the faster speeds?’ And they say, ‘yes, we just didn't know if it was really here.’... It's here!" said Northcutt.
"The 3G's a lot, lot slower right now and always hangs up on you and takes a little while to download videos and stuff like that. It would be a lot better," said Verizon Wireless customer Justin Stewart.
