Abilene celebrates Halloween early at 'Boo at the Zoo'

ABILENE, Texas -

Halloween came early for kiddos in Abilene Saturday afternoon. From noon to 6 p.m., parents and their children lined up to show off their costumes and collect candy from local vendors.

Claudia Diltz, second-year chairman of Boo at the Zoo, was looking forward to seeing all the children dressed up for the day.

"I just love watching the kids in their costumes; they are having such a good time and today it's all about kids and candy and fun," said Diltz.

She also stressed that Boo at the Zoo is supposed to be a fun and safe area for kids to get candy from people of the community.

"We try to make Boo at the Zoo family friendly and this is a safe place. You know that the people that are giving candy to your children are all good people," said Diltz.

Diltz admits that although she worked hard on the event, it wouldn't have been a hit without the help of the community.

"We are grateful, we are so grateful and we are grateful to have this many people want to come and have a good time with us," she said.

Parents could also enjoy themselves because local vendors were handing out  brochures about their companies. The Sheriff's Office, the YMCA and the Air Force were just some of the booths giving away free candy and information.

One parent, Allison Breeding, was happy to bring her kids to a place where she didn't have to worry about her children.

"It's safe it's fun for the kids and you can also get a lot of great resources while you're here, different people throughout the community," said Breeding. "The dentistry, the different after school programs and just all kinds of stuff that you can find out and can do."

Overall, Diltz wanted everyone to have fun and it brings a smile to her face to be able to contribute.

"I'm a grandmother, so the happier the kids are, the happier I am," said Diltz.
