The Abilene City Council on Thursday approved the purchase of two new fire engines for the Abilene Fire Department.
The new engines are 2014 Ferrara fire engines, totaling $1.1 million for both.
Funding for these new engines is available through the Fire Apparatus Replacement Fund, established by city management in 2011.
Also Thursday, the council approved the purchase of new playground equipment at Redbud Park.
The cost for that project will be $137,188. The project will be funded through the 2012 Capitol Improvements Program.
The new playground equipment would replace the existing equipment, which was installed nearly 20 years ago.
According to a City Council memo, "the current equipment is constructed of wood and deteriorating quickly. The new structures will bring the entire playground up to current playground safety standards and provide more accessibility for children with physical disabilities."
