Abilene ISD officials are planning for a regular school day, with no early release, despite the wintry weather much of the area is experiencing. Below is a release  AISD sent to the news media:

"Dear Families and Staff of Abilene ISD:

I have been asked several times this morning about the possibility of early dismissal due to weather and travel conditions.  The team and I have been in close consultation with the weather bureaus and with Wylie ISD and other districts in the area.  Ultimately, we’ve decided to stick with regular school hours for the day here in Abilene ISD, rather than closing early.  We will run our regular bus schedules at normal times.

Please understand that Abilene ISD has over 17,000 children, many of whom would be left in cold and unattended homes, or out in the ugly weather, if we were to dismiss early on short notice.  Moreover, as we’ve monitored the weather and the roads we have no reason to think conditions will be less safe this afternoon during regular dismissal time.

Also, please understand that we value the opinions and rights of parents and guardians;  so, we will offer no objections if parents or authorized caregivers choose to come take their children home early by checking them out through the campus office for personal convenience and peace of mind, in the usual manner.

As for internal AISD staff, I realize our teachers and other team members are bound here supervising and protecting our students throughout the day as necessary, despite the inconvenience and inevitable disruption of classroom environment from all the excitement.  Please accept my appreciation and accolades for your selflessness and your eternal willingness to serve our children even in such unusual and challenging circumstances.

Please try to be safe in your own travels and STAY WARM this weekend!

Thank you,

Heath Burns"

A few AISD sporting events have been affected:

Two basketball games featuring Abilene High School and Cooper High School varsity boys teams have been cancelled this weekend, November 22-23, due to inclement weather conditions.

Abilene High’s game against Lubbock-Monterey scheduled for Friday night in Eagle Gym has been cancelled. No makeup date was announced.

The Cooper Cougars’ game scheduled for Saturday afternoon in Argyle also has been cancelled and rescheduled for Dec. 31.
