Every year, students are at risk of sharing germs.
Abilene ISD nurses encourage parents to get their children vaccinated. In order to prevent spreading viruses, schools require students to be up-to-date on all of their vaccinations.
The requirements are different at every grade level.
"If we have an outbreak like the measles right now and they're having an outbreak in Tarrant County," AISD Nurse Debra McCrackean said. "The kids with immunizations, they're not gonna be the ones that are at risk. It's going to be the children that don't have immunizations that are going to get whatever the outbreak is."
If parents choose not to vaccinate their children, they must get a waiver from the Texas State Department of Health exempting the child.
Students at both Abilene and Wylie ISD start school Monday, August 26th.
