ABILENE, Texas -

A 16-member committee comprised of community members, parents and students was selected Tuesday to study and make recommendations to the Board of Trustees on the Abilene ISD Master Facilities Plan.

The board selected and commissioned the citizens’ committee, which elected Dr. Jeff Arrington as chairman. The committee was formed after the board received the latest Master Facilities Plan report in June to help prioritize needs for AISD facilities and make a recommendation to the board on possible future action.

According to Director of Communications Phil Ashby, AISD administrators and architectural representatives presented a report to the committee Tuesday that outlined facility and demographic assessments conducted by independent firms more than a year ago.

“My vision – and I think it's similar to Dr. Arrington's – is that the committee not only creates initial recommendations but follows through and creates accountability for the administration and the school board to see that the vision of the committee is ultimately implemented,” Superintendent Heath Burns said.

Arrington said the committee meetings won’t be open during the deliberation process “because of the potential for property decisions or acquisitions and the need for committee members to be completely free and candid in their conversations.”

Ashby said the committee could make a recommendation(s) by late summer or early fall. If needed, the recommendation(s) could go to a bond election for voters to make final decisions.

In addition to Arrington, committee members are: Brooke Bailey, Mike Bonner, Ovelia Campos, Mike Dunahoo, Will Dugger, Cary Etter, Tracy Howle, Lois Jamison, Eva Johnson, Danny Kittley, Sandra Minnick, Dee Robinson, Angie Wiley, Alex Galindo (Cooper High School student) and Clark Neil (ATEMS High School student).
