Abilene Regional Medical Center coordinates care package drive to honor veterans

Employees at Abilene Regional Medical Center wanted to make sure servicemen and women feel appreciated this Veteran's Day.
In honor of those who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces, employees of the hospital got together Friday morning and assembled care packages that will be sent to Afghanistan.
While Jeff Catoe now works in human resources at the hospital, he's also a veteran of the armed forces and wanted to do something extra special this year.
"It's just wonderful," Catoe said. "It shows them that they are supported and that they are loved and that they are appreciated."
The care package drive was the brain-child of the hospital's Reward and Recognition committee, that seeks to give back to the community.
So, why veterans?
"Oh, why not?" said Ethan Shepherd, who also works in human resources. "I mean, with all the sacrifices they make not only in some cases with their lives, but with their time away from their families and you know, they make it possible for us to live a good life."
While receiving stuff is good, Shepherd said maybe it's the thought that truly counts.
"You know, from talking to our veterans here in the facility, you know, the food is great, but a lot of times just the thank-you notes and the just to know that they're being though of is important to them," Shepherd said.
All the goods were donated by hospital employees. According to Shepherd, they received so much stuff that they're saving some for another shipment in January.
In addition to the package drive, a Veteran's Day tribute will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 11, in the Women's Center, located on the ARMC campus.
