ABILENE, Texas -

Thousands of youngsters are heading back to school Monday morning.

All Abilene and Wylie School Districts will open up bright and early for the new school year. With more cars on the road Monday morning and possibly more traffic jams in school zones, Abilene police have tips for parents and guardians during the  morning and afternoon rush.

"Drive safe. Don't drive distracted," Abilene Police Department Public Information Officer George Spindler said.

That's the number one point the APD wants to drive home as families get ready to go back to school. APD also urge people to be aware of the school zones.

"We want guardians and parents to talk to their children about using those crosswalks," Officer Spindler said. "They are there for a reason and people need to start paying attention again."

Texas law indicates that driving in a school zone while talking on a cell phone is not allowed.

"On top of that I want to remind teenagers driving to school," Officer Spindler said. "State law still prohibits anyone under the age of 18 from utilizing a wireless device while driving. That includes handheld and hands-free."

If a driver is caught, the mistake can result in major fines.

The early morning drive comes with bright, blinding elements that could impair drivers.

"We need to be mindful that that sun could play a negative role while we're driving and the glare could cause some problems so let's make sure that those sunglasses are clean and readily available in our care and ready to go Monday," Officer Spindler said.

To prevent accidents police suggest to plan and prepare so that drivers don't have to rush and speed.

Here are the morning start times for Abilene and Wylie School Districts:
