Austin-area flood damage estimate spikes sharply
(AP) - Travis County officials report that their updated estimate of damage from the Halloween flood is more than seven times its initial estimate.
Four people died in the flood.
According to the Austin American-Statesman (http://bit.ly/1eus8kF), a county report released Wednesday estimates the damage totaled $107.3 million, mainly from damage to roads, bridges and public utilities and the cost of debris removal.
The initial cost to local governments in Travis County was $14.4 million and $1 million each in adjacent Hays and Williamson counties. Total damage statewide would have to add up to $35 million to qualify for federal disaster aid.
The new report also estimates that 755 homes were damaged by the flood, with more than 500 being destroyed or having major damage. Fewer than 150 of them have flood insurance.
