DYESS AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -

The man responsible for the welfare of more than 12,000 members of the Dyess community was recognized and promoted for his accomplishments Thursday.

7th Bomb Wing Commander Glen D. VanHerck is now a Brigadier General after being nominated by the United States Air Force, appointed by the President of the United States, and then approved by Congress.

Lieutenant General Robin Rand presided over the ceremony, pointing out highlights throughout General VanHerck's time in the Air Force.

"He graduated number one in his class and he got the world renowned F-15 Eagle," said Rand. "That was his assignment. It's a big deal."

Rand also offered words of encouragement.

"Exciting things are in store for you, as well as big challenges," he said.

General VanHerck's family helped with the final honors of pinning on his new star. He said he owes them, among others, for where he is today. They moved 17 times in 25 years for his career.

"I guarantee it folks, you don't make it in the Air Force without family, friends and leaders like those taking care of me," said VanHerck as he accepted his new rank.

"It's a crowning moment in his career," said retired Colonel William Ehrie.

Ehrie said the ceremony is special to everyone in the Dyess community.

"I'm honored to see my fellow officers and colleagues get recognized for all they've done for this nation," said Ehrie. "I'm proud of him, and proud of his family."

He said VenHerck should be proud too.

"He's gonna be one of the key leaders in the U.S. Air Force as we go forward with the conflicts and issues we face trying to maintain the defense of the country," said Ehrie.

The promotion takes effect September 2, 2013.
