BLANKET, Texas -

All year long, all Blanket ISD students can get free breakfasts and lunches thanks to the federal government's Provision 2 program. Teachers can also eat for free.

"Providing a free lunch where they don't have to worry about the money, bringing money to school or having to collect money works wonderfully," Blanket ISD Superintendent Kevy Allred said. "It's one less thing to worry about."

Allred said there is an application process to go through, but he encouraged other school districts to look into the program. He said how much money the school receives to fund for the free meals depends on how many students are enrolled. Blanket ISD received at least $100,000 through Provision 2.

"What we have to determine is whether or not the amount of money that the government gives will be enough to support the cafeteria program without taking money from the students. They have to eat free."

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) website, under Provision 2, free meals must be provided to all students.

However, the federal government may not cover the entire cost, which may be a reason why not every school has joined with Provision 2. The school districts would have to decide whether the federal reimbursement is worth foregoing students who would normally pay.
