Brownwood, Early approve budgets for upcoming fiscal year

The Brownwood City Council approved a $30.6 million budget for the 2013-2014 fiscal year Tuesday – a 1.19 percent increase over the previous year.

City employees won’t receive salary increases under the just-approved budget.

Water consumption and sanitation rates will increase about 3 percent.

Additionally, the water base rate, which covers the cost of the Brown County Water Improvement District's services, also increased 3 percent. The city’s sewer rate increased 6 percent to cover improvement payments on the wastewater treatment plant.

Meanwhile, members of the Early City Council finalized the city’s budget Tuesday evening.

Early’s  current budget stands at about $5 million.

Tax rates slightly decreased from 53.96 to 51.46 cents per $100 valuation, Early’s city manager said.

Utility rates in Early, however, will slightly increase.

Water rates increased 6 percent and sanitation rates increased 5 percent.
