Teachers in Brown County got a free opportunity to get a Concealed Handgun License (CHL) on Saturday.
The certification class, which consisted of a Microsoft Powerpoint lecture, a written test and a shooting proficiency test, which was also open to the public for a fee of $99.
"It's important to learn the skills, the basics of handling a firearm, both to keep yourself safe as well as if you're using it for the defense of other people," CHL instructor Wayne Goforth said.
This is a precautionary measure for people to legally defend themselves. Goforth said he is in favor of teachers being able to carry concealed handguns to protect their students.
According to Goforth, there are four schools in Brown County that allow teachers to carry concealed weapons, one of which includes Brookesmith ISD. The rest wished to remain anonymous.
"All of the mass shootings in America happened in no-gun zones. They're in an area where everybody else is unarmed. The announcement of an armed area could be either a deterrent or a challenge," Goforth said. If or when teachers want to get certified, Goforth said he will help them do so free of charge.
"I don't think all teachers should be carrying concealed handguns because I think it might be a safety factor in the classroom, but if a select few with extensive training had them, then I think that's good. I would be open to it," Cassie Curtis said.
While Curtis is an educator in Brown County, she said she took the class for personal reasons. "I want to be able to protect myself and my kids whenever my husband's not around."
CHL's are good for four years from your upcoming birthday. There is a simple online process to renew your license, which Goforth said would be good for five years.
