Members of the Brownwood Fire Department are sporting a new look for a good cause.
Firefighters decided to shave their heads as part of their fundraising effort for their colleague, Jake Landess, who is in Dallas getting treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
"We were going to shave our heads anyway in support of Jake since he's lost his hair during chemo, so why not raise a little money and help him out at the same time?" Brownwood Fire Marshal Buddy Preston said.
The goal of this particular fundraiser was to raise at least $100 per firefighter. As of Monday, nearly $3,000 has been raised.
"I hope Jake sees it and is having a good time with it," firefighter Brent Bruton said.
Those in the department said they're all like family.
"People that don't live and work at the fire department don't understand that you spend one-third of your life up here, so these guys are all brothers. They're family; they squabble they fight they make up, but he's a brother and anything we can do to help him out is what we're doing," Preston said.
While the firefighters talk to Jake on a regular basis, they said they wish they could be closer to him and see him in person. They especially want to be there for Jake when he receives news from the doctor.
Donations can still be delivered to the Brownwood fire station. Raffle tickets are being sold. One of the big fundraisers for Jake coming up will be the softball game between the Brownwood Fire Department and the Brownwood Police Department next month.
