This year's Little Lionette Camp is helping Brownwood High School's Lionette dance team get closer to a once in a lifetime opportunity.
After attending a dance camp at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, the Brownwood Lionettes received an honor of All American Team, which meant the entire team was invited to perform in the nationally televised Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.
"I couldn't have been more proud of them," BHS Lionettes director Stacee Hetzel said. "For them to have bonded and performed and given me 100 percent, it was just an honor. I was so proud of them."
Hetzel said she's had several individuals from her team dance in the parade before, but never an invitation to everyone altogether.
Receiving the title of All American Team also means a chance to be in the Capital One Bowl halftime performance, which Lionette Destiny Muenzler has experienced. She said she is just as excited for this opportunity. "I'm excited to go out there and represent Brownwood and be there with my team."
So far 11 of the 24 Lionettes have registered to go. They will be in New York City for six days. The trip costs roughly $2,500 to $3,000 per dancer.
This week's Little Lionette Camp will help pay for a portion of it. Registration for the Little Lionette Camp cost $40, and there were 70 girls between the ages of three and 11 in attendance. The kids got to learn simple choreography and play games with one another at the three-day day camp, which ends tomorrow, when the Little Lionettes will perform for their parents.
Hetzel said the team will be holding many fundraisers in the near future, since their payment deadline is September 15th. They have an upcoming bake sale outside of Walmart on August 10th. There is an account set up at Texas Bank on Fisk Avenue. You can make a donation to the "Brownwood High School Lionette Spirit Club".
