Brownwood ISD (BISD) is spending more than $600,000 to provide safety and a new facility for students.
BISD Deputy Superintendent Kevin Gabaree said there are plans to install a new turf at Gordon Wood Stadium and a new roof on Brownwood High School's gym. Building an agricultural facility is also part of the construction projects, which Gabaree presented at Monday night's school board meeting.
"No one has been injured due to the wear of the existing turf but it is time to be replaced to insure that that never occurs," Gabaree said.
While the ag-building will provide students a place to practice showing their animals, the facilities director Vic Singleton said the new pavilion will appeal to more than just students.
"It's going to enhance what the city does to use it and those outside of the city that would like to use it, like for sales, or for shows or for meetings," Singleton said.
Replacing the turf will cost about $430,000. Building the pavilion will cost about $153,000, and replacing the high school gym roof will cost about $35,000.
"We have the money for it from our fund balance so we don't need additional money from the public and we feel good about that," Gabaree said.
Gabaree said the school board will officially approve the three projects on Dec. 9th. There is no timeline set for when the projects will be completed but Gabaree said the goal is to have the new turf installed by Feb. 4th, which is in time for their first district soccer game.
