BROWNWOOD, Texas -

Santa's little helpers were hard at work Wednesday morning at Northwest Elementary School. Third graders jingled bells to help raise money for the Salvation Army.

This is the 4th year that Northwest Elementary students have participated, according to the school counselor Christine Young.

Young, who also coordinated the event, said the purpose is to teach the children the importance of helping others and giving back to the community.

"This week is just kind of 'Acts of Kindness' week around here. We're in it just for the giving aspects."

Third grade-volunteers ring the bells before school from 7:30 a.m. to 7:50 a.m. and after school around 2:30 p.m. for three days during the last week of school before winter break.

A new experience for Young this year is collecting money in the hallways. "Our teachers requested this year that we come down the hallways because they don't always get to be out front when the parents arrive."

She said she often feels overwhelmed yet blessed by the number of people who donate.
