Businesses answer call to install automatic handicap doors at Abilene ISD

Earlier this month, we got a look into what it's like to be Emily Ramirez. Because of cerebral palsy, getting through the doors at Abilene High School has been a challenge for her.

That's why she and her mom, Kimberly, put out a call for help.

"Please help us, we need to get handicap doors installed in AISD, for Emily and for all the children," said Kimberly.

Kimberly and Emily's goal is to raise money to put in at least one, automatic handicap accessible door at Abilene High, if not more across the district.

"Just so I can be independent and open the door and don't have to rely on anyone else," said Emily.

Local businesses have stepped up to the plate; Abilene Glass and Mirror, Lawrence Hall, and Starks Construction have all committed to putting in at least one door. Remax Realtors and Abilene's LULAC have also made generous donations to the cause.

Kimberly and Emily continue their efforts in hopes of installing automatic doors at all of AISD's campuses. To help out, or order a fundraiser t-shirt for $15, email Kimberly and Emily at keepcalmandinstallhandicappdoors@yahoo.com.
