ABILENE, Texas -

The city of Abilene is offering free Christmas tree recycling starting the day after Christmas until Jan. 10.

All lights, ornaments and other non-organic items need to be removed from the tree to prevent damage to equipment. The trees will be chipped into mulch.

Drop Off Locations around town

  • Vacant lot on Hartford Street near 14th
  • Under the water tower on Buffalo Gap and Rebecca Lane
  • The Environmental Recycling Center at 2209 Oak Street, Monday through Saturday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

There will be orange construction fencing setup at each drop-off location and trees need to be placed inside of that fencing.

Artificial Trees may also be taken to the Recycling Center for reuse.

Mulch from the trees will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis starting Jan. 15.

Recycling Center prepares for Recycle Christmas 2013

ABILENE, Texas – The Solid Waste and Recycling division is teaming up with Keep Abilene Beautiful for Recycle Christmas 2013. Recycle Christmas is an annual holiday-themed recycling campaign. Citizens are urged to recycle whatever they can, from Christmas trees, both live and artificial, to wrapping paper and cardboard boxes.

“This is a win-win for citizens; clean up that holiday mess while keeping Abilene green. We are happy to be a part of Recycle Christmas 2013 and hope residents will take advantage of the drop-off locations offered,” said Keep Abilene Beautiful Coordinator, Nicole Eaves.

Three sites for Christmas tree drop-offs will be opened on December 26th. Each site will have orange construction fencing in which to place the trees. All sites will close Friday, January 10th.

The Recycle Christmas tree drop-off locations are:

1. The vacant lot north of KRBC on Hartford Street. Entry must be made from Hartford.

2. Under the water tower at Buffalo Gap Road and Rebecca Lane

3. The Environmental Recycling Center, located at 2209 Oak Street is open

Monday through Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to accept Christmas trees.

All lights, ornaments and bases should be removed from the trees. These items can damage the chipping equipment and contaminate the mulch produced.
