ABILENE, Texas -

The City of Abilene approved the first reading of the 2014-2015 city budget, Tuesday...moving the $80 million dollar budget forward.

If the budget makes it through the three public hearings without changes most residents will see their taxes go up.

Valuations for residential properties rose 3.2%, overall property valuations rose by 2.8%.

For a family with a home that was worth $100,000 dollars last year, taxes would rise about $12 a year.

Council members voted to keep the tax rate the same, at 68.60 per hundred dollar valuation.

The budget also includes a 3% across the board raise for employees starting January  1.

The first of three public hearings on the budget will be held on August 14 at the regular city council meeting.
