ABILENE, Texas -

There's an interesting item on the Abilene City Council's agenda for Thursday that just might affect where you buy your Sunday newspaper.

The City Council may decide to prohibit all sales and donation solicitations in what they call "high-traffic, high-accident" intersections.

"Essentially, what we're attemping to do through this ordinance is to provide for increase safety of individuals selling along those roadways," said City Manager Larry Gilley.

Sales that would be affected include newspaper sales, civic and social group sales, as well as the Abilene Fire Department's Fill-the-Boot campaign.

"The way we're approaching this is to limit the location to areas other than high-traffic or high-accident areas that we've identified," Gilley said.

Some of the identified areas include the intersection of Southwest and Clack, as well as Barrow and South 14th.

"We're trying to be sensitive to those individuals that want to conduct these sales, but at the same time, there's just a significant risk associated with being in those locations," Gilley said.

Gilley said ultimately, it's "just a public safety issue."

Gilley said the city has been working with the Abilene Police Department for the past year to identify these areas.

The item will go to a public hearing on Nov. 21.

Other locations where sales may be prohibited are as follows:

Buffalo Gap from South 27th to Antilley

I-20 from US 83 to North Judge Ely Boulevard

Judge Ely from ES South 11th St. to EN 10th St.

Ambler Avenue from Grape St. to East Lake Rd.

Treadaway Blvd. from Hwy 80 to South 11th St.

Treadaway from South 27th to Industrial Blvd.

KTXS will be at the City Council meeting Thursday morning and will bring you more facts on this issue as we get them.
