Cowboys shoot 307 in final round of ASC Championship

Hardin-Simmons’ men’s golf team closed out the 2014 American Southwest Conference Golf Championship with its best round of the tournament, firing a 307, as HSU finished in sixth place as a team at the Squaw Valley Golf Club in Glen Rose.

Junior Sean Aleman shot a 75 to lead the Cowboys on Tuesday. Brandon Heard led HSU for the tournament with an 81-76-78-235 for a 15th place finish overall.

Aleman improved each round and shot 86-79-75-240. Freshman Sam Rogers also improved each round with scored of 86-83-76-245.

Junior Ryan Hughes shot 83-80-83-246 and freshman Austin Prior shot 85-86-78-249.

Aleman was named the ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year.

Mary Hardin-Baylor shot a one-over 289 in the final round to edge defending national champion Texas-Tyler for the team title. They finished the week 310-309-289-908. UTT shot 305-314-291-910. Concordia was third with a 922, UT-Dallas shot 937 and Louisiana College was fifth with a 938. HSU was sixth with a 960 and LeTourneau shot 1,014 to place seventh.

UMHB’s Robby Schimmels shot a five-under 67 to rally for the individual title with a 219 total.

The tournament closed out the season for the Cowboys.
