Bible Hardware has been a staple of the historic downtown Abilene community since 1939, and one of it's dedicated employees has been a staple of the store since 1978.
Grady Knight retired from the store Friday after more than three decades of service.
"The people that I have to deal with have been so wonderful," said Knight. "I've enjoyed every second of it."
He's been a fixture at Bible Hardware for 35 years and just about everyone who walks through the door knows Grady.
"He's just so helpful in everything," said co-owner Carol Purser. "Every customer is looking for Grady."
"They come in here pretty specifically just to have him wait on them, " said his coworker Chareila Bien, who has worked with Grady Knight for 19 years. "A lot of women," she said laughing.
Grady Knight is a man of few words but there is one he's known for.
"When a customer says they need something he says 'welllll' and off he goes to help them!" said Purser.
At age 75 he's saying goodbye to his second home.
"I'm part of the family and they've been my family for a long time," said Knight.
"I wish he wasn't gonna leave because it's probably gonna break my heart," said Bien.
Knight said he's ready for the next chapter.
"I decided it was time to look for other adventures," he said.
A party was held today to give everyone a chance to wish him luck in his retirement.
Purser said he won't be easily replaced.
"We're going to miss him," said Purser. "It's not the same without Grady."
Purser said she and her employees are crossing their fingers that Grady gets bored with retirement and decides to come back.
