WACO, Texas -

(AP) - School officials in West say the estimated $117 million cost of rebuilding schools destroyed by a fertilizer plant explosion can be cut in half.
West Superintendent Marty Crawford tells the Waco Tribune-Herald (http://bit.ly/1cyNaxH ) that the district's construction manager now estimates a rebuild cost of about $50 to $60 million. The higher estimate came in the early days after the April 17 explosion that killed 15 people.
The school district initially submitted a proof of loss of about $53 million. Its insurer originally offered about $25 million. Both sides are still negotiating on a final payout.
Federal aid is also expected to help pay for the rebuilding.
The blast at West Fertilizer destroyed parts of three schools. Older students are now going to class in a temporary campus of portable buildings.
