Michael Henry Martin was a singer, music producer and the host of "Henry’s Den" a 1970s TV show that aired on KTXS.
Martin passed away Sunday. He was 68.
"You know there's a big hole in the world today. Michael Henry, super nice guy, professional, I can’t begin to explain how I felt the minute I found out he had passed. The world is a much darker and quieter place without him," said Rudy Fernandez who worked with Martin in radio.
Martin was most well known for his music. The guitarist and producer recorded with some big names at his recording studio, Castle Sound Productions, in Abilene. His album, “Real and Funky” is still available on iTunes.
"He was one of the most creative people that I've ever worked with. He was a fine musician and at his recording studio he could do some beautiful work putting music together," said James Hallmark who worked with Martin both in television and music.
Martin not only produced and performed music; he also mentored many young musicians.
"He had a way of getting the most out of you. He wouldn't put you down. He would say, ‘Why don't we try it this way,’ or, ‘what if you said this and what if you emphasize this,’ and you’d do it and it came out beautifully. He's a good coach," said Hallmark.
"He had a minds eye, or a minds ear to hear and to pull out of people what he wanted to get out of them," Fernandez said.
The television show host made a name for himself at KTXS where he hosted his own show, “Henry’s Den” in the 1970s.
"He was very casual, very laid-back, very insightful and did a great interview. People loved to be on the show," said Hallmark.
Those who knew Martin said he will be a hard act to follow.
"If you've worked with him to not be able to work with him again is really kind of a sad thing," Hallmark said.
Elmwood Funeral Home is handling Martin’s arrangements. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel.
