BROWNSVILLE, Texas -

(AP) - A former South Texas mayor has been arrested on a misdemeanor charge of operating a gambling establishment.

Former Brownsville Mayor Pat Ahumada was arrested Friday after authorities raided his Goldmine 777 business.

Cameron County District Attorney Luis Saenz announced last month his intention to shut down the county's so-called 8-liner operations.

The businesses allegedly attempt to skirt state gambling restrictions by paying out prizes rather than cash, but Saenz says any cash prize of $5 or more, even if the proceeds go to a charity, is illegal.

Five such businesses were shut down in April.

In a statement released to KGBT-TV (http://bit.ly/1273iRD ), Ahumada said his arrest stemmed from Saenz's personal vendetta. He said he legally operated a "Sweepstakes Internet Cafe."

More than 200 computers were seized from Ahumada's business.
