Get ready for a major construction project on Loop 322 access roads in Abilene.
Below is the press release concerning construction from the Texas Department of Transportation:
A major construction project to convert 2¼ miles of two-way frontage roads to one-way operation along Loop 322 from Lytle Creek to Maple Street will begin the week of October 21. The project is part of an ongoing effort to convert frontage roads throughout Abilene to improve safety.
The project includes pavement resurfacing, ramp modifications, turnarounds at major intersections and some sidewalk construction. When work gets under way, the inside lanes nearest the freeway will be closed for construction and traffic will be limited to one lane in one direction on each side of the freeway. As work progresses, some long-term ramp closures will be necessary. Throughout construction, drivers are encouraged to pay attention to changing traffic situations and to be on the lookout for workers and heavy equipment in the work zone.
One-way frontage roads reduce the risk of collisions by eliminating some of the conflict points at entrance and exit ramps. The project is one of several planned for Abilene to bring consistency to frontage roads throughout the city. A similar project for US 83 from Canyon Rock Road to FM 707 is under contract and pending construction, and an ongoing project along I-20 is at the half-way point. An additional frontage road project planned for Loop 322 from Lytle Creek to SH 36 is currently unfunded and does not have a final design.
The upcoming project is estimated to be finished by summer 2014. Contract Paving Co. of Tye will complete the work for $4.2 million.
