Students, faculty and city leaders gathered Monday to break ground on a new combined school in Colorado City.
Students grabbed shovels and threw dirt, symbolically beginning construction on a new $30 million facility across from the current high school. "I think it's going to be a state of the art facility", says CISD Superintendent Reggy Spencer, "It'll make the community proud."
The new facility, passed during a bond election in May, will house students from the three current schools: Kelley Elementary, Hutchinson Elementary and Colorado Middle School.
Colorado High School was built during the 1970's and stands just to the north of the sight of the new combined school. However, the three schools being replaced are very old. One principal says the newest of the three schools was built in the 1920's.
The project is scheduled to be completed by August of 2015.
