ABILENE, Texas -

Several Hardin-Simmons University (HSU) staff members welcomed international students into their homes to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Two students from China received a taste of a traditional Thanksgiving meal at HSU coordinator Bonnie Powell's house.

Powell and her family served turkey, ham, rolls, and dressing among many food items.

"I explained to them earlier that on Thanksgiving we eat and eat some more and eat all day long," Powell said with a laugh.

She said she opened her home to these students because she didn't want them to be alone for the holidays.

"It's Thanksgiving Day. I would hate for anybody to have to be sitting in their dorm room on a holiday and not being able to enjoy it with someone," Powell said.

Although Powell was teaching the students, she learned something about their culture. "They don't celebrate Thanksgiving but they have an autumn holiday."

A couple of professors participated in hosting international students as well. Powell said on average, there are about 15 international students studying at HSU.
